Fundraising Wrapup

Fundraising Wrapup

I thought it would be a good time to do a final report on our fundraising for both Cool Earth and the Lotus Children’s Centre.

Our total donations for the Lotus orphanage came to $2,054 in cash. We also were very fortunate to carry with us a massive donation of school supplies given by Dale Watkins of United Stationers, plus several boxes of toothbrushes and toothpaste given by our personal dentists.

Our total donations for Cool Earth, the official charity of the Mongol Rally, came to $1,300.  These folks do good work in protecting imperiled rainforests in South America by working with indigenous people.

We are very grateful to our many supporters who helped us aid these wonderful charities in their good works.

Postscript: We arranged for Don and the boys to meet the couple responsible for the Living Hope charity in Vladivostok, Russia when they arrived there at the end of the Siberian part of the journey.  We knew there would be a lot of camping and food supplies left on the bus by our teammates and we wanted to be sure that they’d be useful to someone, rather than thrown away.  The founders are from New Zealand originally and settled in Vladivostok after seeing the plight of that area’s street children.  They were delighted to receive our donated tents, sleeping bags, LOTS of peanut butter, and other useful items from the bus, and we were happy to get the bus cleaned out before she was loaded on the ferry to Japan.

Trips like this one remind us of how fortunate most of us are to live in places with a community safety net, especially for children.  Thank you for helping these charities provide care for Mongolia and Russia’s most vulnerable kids.
